🚕 Taxi Driver: Is it worth spending so much money on education nowadays?

Last Monday, I cabbed from home to the TEDx venue.

👨‍🔧 I had a chit chat with the taxi driver and he shared with me his story of his 2 sons.

He said he spent almost HK$3 Million sending his sons to high school/university in the UK and was not sure if he made the right decision.

🇬🇧 I said he should be proud of himself because he made a decent living as a taxi driver and could afford sending his 2 sons overseas.

He started to question whether it was worth the investment as his eldest son ended up becoming a kindergarten teacher.

💹 The taxi driver actually wanted his eldest son to become a banker instead. (This reminded me of my parents when I quit banking)

So I told him that maybe his son someday will become a Nobel prize winner or a famous professor!

👨‍🏫 He said that if he knew his eldest son would become a teacher, he would not have paid 4 years of university for him in the UK.

He’d rather have him study in HK, paying the basic annual university tuition of around HK$40k.

🇭🇰 HK$160k for a HK Bachelor degree vs HK$1 Million for a UK degree 🇬🇧

On the other hand, he felt really proud of his younger son because he ended up being a dentist………

⚡ If you only have $1 Million,

would you use it for your son’s overseas education

Or for your son’s property down payment?

Or save it for your own retirement to live a more comfortable life?
