😅 My candidate said my advice was unrealistic - Here’s why

There is this close candidate of mine

He is a VP with over 15 years of banking experience.

🤳 He messages me every week in the past 3 years, asking me for roles that can pay a higher salary.

He always tells me that he wants a higher salary and does not mind changing departments or switching out from banking.

☎ From time to time, I would recommend him to go for a promotion internally or externally.

However he told me it is impossible because his senior has been with the bank for many years with no signs of retirement.

Or director roles are very rare nowadays..

Or the banking market is too competitive..

After giving me the same reasons every week for the past 3 years,

📞 Yesterday I was direct with him and said:

You will get

✏ a 10- 20% increment if you move to a different bank keeping the same title.

✏ a 20-30% increment if you get promoted internally or externally at a new bank.

Then I shared the salary of the CEO of the banks to him

🔺 HK$12.3 Million for HSBC CEO HK - Base Pay

🔺 HK$21.65 Million for Hang Seng CEO HK - Total Comp

🔺 HK$21.4 Million for BEA CEO HK - Total Comp

The CEO of a bank makes at least 10-15 times your current salary.

If you purely go for a salary jump, why not be the CEO of the bank?

If your calibre isn't CEO level, would you like to manage your expectation a bit lower to department/BU head? Then work your way further up?

🔶 My candidate knows that the more senior you get, the longer it takes to land something better.

Then he started giving me the same excuses that

There is only one department head. There is only one CEO.

Then I told him that

If you are not satisfied being a VP, it might also be your homework to improve yourself to be more competitive

To get promoted internally or externally to be the number one in your department/sub division.

Finally I asked

🔺 If there is a Director nomination, will your boss put your name first or another VP in your team first?

Then he went silent on the phone.

🔹 After the chat, he whatsapp me and said my advice was unrealistic…. Which might be true

In my mind, all I think about is how to be the best recruiter in my industry, once I become the best, I can have bargaining power to make more money.
